Introduction 🌟
HealthBeats is a health technology company offering a Remote Vitals Monitoring (RVM) platform for hospitals and clinics. The platform enables healthcare providers to remotely monitor patients’ vital signs, supporting proactive and continuous care from the comfort of the patients’ homes.
Background
This project focused on redesigning the blood glucose monitoring experience while migrating the React Native app to native iOS and Android platforms. The previous workflow, though functional, was often cumbersome and inconsistent across devices, making daily tracking less seamless for patients.
The redesign provided an opportunity to modernise the interface, streamline the measurement flow and deliver a mobile-first, engaging experience that supports patients and care teams with accurate, actionable data.
My Role 👩🏻💻
• Led the end-to-end design of the patient-facing mobile experience (iOS & Android), modernising the interface and introducing forward-thinking features that guide patients and elevate the blood glucose monitoring experience.
• Delivered the next-generation Diabetes Monitoring experience in just 3 months, providing patients with a seamless, engaging and easy-to-use solution for tracking their blood glucose.
Impact 🚀
Patients: Designed a guided and user-friendly experience that simplifies blood glucose measurement from start to finish, helping patients feel confident and supported throughout the process.
User Feedback: HealthBeats has enabled seniors to consistently monitor their vitals and fostering the habit of regular measurement. This engagement enhances health awareness and empowers both patients and care teams with actionable insights.
Understanding Daily Challenges ⚠️
We set out to understand how patients manage their daily blood glucose measurements such as their routines, challenges and opportunities to make the process easier.
For healthcare providers, we explored pain points and obstacles in effectively monitoring patients. These insights highlighted opportunities to create a more seamless and connected experience for both patients and care teams.

What We Learned from Users 🧠
Our research highlighted several key challenges in the blood glucose monitoring experience:
1. Patients often encounter error states without clear troubleshooting guidance to help them recover and continue measuring.
2. Measurement instructions are sometimes unclear which make it harder for patients to take readings accurately.
3. There is a need for educational content that reinforces safe and proper measurement practices.
Simplifying the Measurement Journey ✨
Building on our user insights, we aimed to make blood glucose measurement easier, more reliable and more informative for patients.
As part of the transition to native iOS and Android, we implemented instructional onboarding to introduce new features and help users navigate the updated experience with confidence.
1. Provide progressive guidance that helps users move from quick solutions to step-by-step troubleshooting and ultimately directs them to contact support if the issue persists.
2. Improve measurement instructions to be elderly-friendly by using clear language and simplified steps, making the process easier to follow and reducing errors.
3. Provide educational content such as visuals or short guides to show patients how to handle and store test strips safely and how to use the lancing device correctly for finger pricking.
Bringing the Experience to Life 🎨
We created interactive prototypes to validate the experience, test usability and gather feedback before final implementation.
• Progressive Error Guidance: Guides users through errors with a structured approach from quick fixes to detailed troubleshooting and finally connecting them to support if needed.
• Elderly-Friendly Instructions: Simplified and accessible instructions make the measurement process easy to follow and reduce mistakes for users.
• Educational Guidance: Visuals and instructional content empower users to follow safe and proper practices.
Outcome 🎉
Patients measured their blood glucose more accurately and confidently, experiencing fewer interruptions and frustrations. The redesigned workflow supported smoother daily routines, helping users feel more in control of their health. Educational resources and clear guidance improved understanding of safe practices, while overall engagement increased, creating a more reliable and connected diabetes management experience.

Key Takeaways 📚
This project really showed me the value of collaboration and user-centered design. Working with users revealed challenges that weren’t obvious at first, from workflow friction to the need to capture emotional context.
Through design sprints and feedback, I learned that small UX improvements such as clear instructions, gentle notifications and onboarding can make a big difference. Updating the system across iOS and Android also taught me how to balance technical limits with user needs.
